What Canadian Nurses Need to Know
On September 19, 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed a presidential proclamation titled Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers. Headlines around this update may feel overwhelming, but here’s the good news for Canadian nurses: this proclamation does not apply to TN or TD visas.
According to Cadence Moore, an attorney with Corporate Immigration Law Partners, the changes affect only certain H-1B applicants and do not alter TN regulations in any way. Canadian nurses working under TN visas can continue their U.S. careers without interruption.
Understanding the H-1B Visa First
What the H-1B Visa Is Used For
The H-1B is a U.S. work visa for specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor’s degree.
Why Canadian Nurses Rarely Use H-1B
Most Canadian nurses use the TN visa, which is renewable, faster to process, and not subject to the H-1B lottery system.
How H-1B Updates Relate to Broader Immigration Policy
As Moore explains, even though Canadian nurses aren’t impacted by this proclamation, H-1B changes often signal how U.S. immigration priorities are shifting more broadly.
